How to prepare your recyclables

  • Discard all plastic covers from magazines and junk mail etc
  • If you have shredded paper to recycle, please ensure it is secured such that it cannot blow away
  • Wash, squash and flatten empty plastic bottles then replace the lid. This will keep the bottle flat and leave more space in the box. Don’t worry about trying to squash bleach or other strong cleaner bottles, just leave the lids on.
  • Flatten all cardboard boxes before putting in the cardboard recycling bag
  • Metal lids and caps from glass jars can be recycled, place them in the bigger box
  • Wash out all plastic bottles, cans, aluminium foil, glass bottles and jars using the end of the washing up water after you have finished the dishes
  • Collect up clean aluminium foil in a bag and when the bag is full put it in the bigger box
  • Ensure there are no plastic bags in either box except for the ones containing clean aluminium foil and the batteries

Storing your boxes and bags

Your boxes and bags can be stored either inside or outside your house, or wherever you have suitable space. You can stack the paper box on top of the bigger box, which will prevent materials blowing away and help save space. You have been given a cover that will fit over the top box and will help keep the paper dry.

On very windy days the cover could blow off. If this is likely to happen to you please place a brick or similar object on top of the box to reduce litter.

It may not always be possible to give you back the same boxes each time they are emptied because of the collection methods being used. However, you are welcome to place your house number on the boxes and the crews will try to return them.

Please ensure the boxes and bags are kept clean. Washing the items for recycling before placing in the box will help with this. The bags for glass and cardboard are machine washable at a low temperature but do not tumble dry or iron.
