Street closures

Lewes District Council has powers under the Town Police Clauses Act 1847 – Section 21 to close public highways in the Lewes District for public entertainment and sporting events. These events can include street parties, bonfire celebrations and late night Christmas shopping.

If you wish to request the closure of a public highway for the purpose of a public entertainment or sporting event then please print off and complete the form below and send it to:

There is no charge for this service but we do ask that you send your forms in at least 8 weeks prior to the event. Please remember to enclose a plan highlighting the length(s) of the street(s) to be closed.

East Sussex County Council have advised that for future guidance to organisers, the advance warning signs and diversion signs lettering must conform to the Traffic Signs Regulations and Generals Directions 2002, 50mm in height, black on a yellow background. Below is a sample plan as a guide to how a road closure and diversion route should be presented to enable ESCC to adequately analyse the impact of the event upon their Network and satisfy any legal requirements. Please remember - It is the organiser's reponsibility to advise any residents and/or businesses on the road affected of the date, time and extent of the road closure.

PLEASE NOTE: We do not provide signs or barriers for road closures and neither do the Police. As the applicant you are responsible for ensuring that all necessary road signs and barriers are placed out on the highway to warn other traffic.
