We grant permission to close roads and precincts within the district for events. Find details, advice and how to apply.
We have powers under the Town Police Clauses Act 1847 – Section 21 to close public roads in the district for public entertainment and sporting events. There is no charge for this service.
The pedestrian precincts in Lewes and Newhaven are not covered by the Town Police Clauses Act but are licensed for use by us. We can deal with applications to use this area. Please contact the Planning department.
However, we have no authority to close pavements. This is the responsibility of East Sussex County Council Rights Of Way department.
Forms should be completed at least 8 weeks prior to the event. Any requests received with less than this will be refused. We will not have sufficient time to conduct relevant consultations.
East Sussex County Council advises organisers with regards to advance warning and diversion signs. Lettering must conform to the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2002, being 50mm in height, black on a yellow background.
A sample road closure and diversion route should be sent to ESCC Highways to analyse the impact of the event upon their Network and satisfy any legal requirements.
As the applicant you are responsible for ensuring that all necessary road signs and barriers are placed on the highway.
We do not provide signs or barriers for road closures and neither do the Police. If required, they are available from Colas Ltd.
It is your responsibility to advise any residents and businesses on the road affected and the date, time and extent of the road closure.
