The Sustainability Appraisal is used to test Local Development Documents (LDDs) to ensure that the Local Development Framework (LDF) delivers sustainable development.
Sustainable development has been defined as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” (Brundtland). Sustainable development is agreed to be the preferred method of development throughout the world and is the key theme which underpins planning policy in the United Kingdom.
In accordance with European and national legislation, Local Development Documents (LDDs) prepared for the emerging Local Development Framework (LDF) must be subject to a Sustainability Appraisal, which will incorporate a Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA), to ensure that our plans deliver sustainable development.
A Sustainability Appraisal (incorporating a Strategic Environmental Assessment) was prepared to accompany the Emerging Core Strategy, helping to identify sustainable options for the Emerging Core Strategy to consider. The document was available for consultation between 30 September 2011 and 2 December 2011. This consultation has closed.

The Sustainability Appraisal that accompanies the Emerging Core Strategy builds upon the Sustainability Appraisal Scoping Report that was consulted upon in May 2010. The Sustainability Appraisal Scoping Report can be found here:
