Conservation Area Appraisals Comments

Chailey CommonWe have produced four draft Conservation Area Appraisals, for Chailey Green, Firle, Hamsey (Cooksbridge) and Hamsey (Offham) and would like people to let us know in writing what they think of the latest draft appraisals.

These are the latest in a series of Conservation Area Appraisals for all the 35 Conservation Areas in the district. They help to ensure that their special qualities are not harmed by inappropriate development.

The Conservation Area Appraisals give an overview of the history and development of each area and try to define what it is that makes them special.

They also identify specific features which contribute towards their character, for example:

They may even include intangible qualities such as activities, sights and smells which are characteristic of a place.

The documents also identify elements that could be improved. This provides a useful basis to develop proposals for preservation and enhancement should the opportunity arise through the planning system.

The current draft stage of their production enables local people to participate in the identification of features that are important to the character of the area in which they live or work.

Local involvement is an essential aspect of the consultation process and local residents are encouraged to comment on the draft documents.  Following this consultation period, any appropriate revisions will be made before the Conservation Area Appraisals are endorsed by the Council and published.

The documents are available online or at the Planning Services office at Southover House. Comments should be made in writing by Friday 30 April 2010.
