Altering your home yourself – getting permission

Under the Housing Act 1985 you need written permission from the Council to make any alterations to your home. The council cannot unreasonably deny permission.

This includes

• Alterations to fixtures and fittings – for example, new kitchen units
• An addition to the services provided – for example fitting a new gas fire
• Putting up outside TV aerial
• Putting up a satellite dish
• Outside redecoration
• Putting up a shed
• Putting up another building, such as a garage
• Laying a hardstanding so you can park a car or caravan in your garden

When we decide if permission should be granted we may take into account safety issues, any reduction in value of the premises, and any costs which might fall on the Council in the future.

When you return your completed application you should provide a sketch plan of any alterations, what materials you intend to use, and any other information such as Architects plans or brochures from supplying companies to give us an idea of what you propose.

It is also essential that you seek planning permission if it is required.
