Housing Benefit

This is a scheme to help people on low income with their rent. There are three types of assistance:

  • Rent Rebate - This is provided by the Council to help its tenants with their rent. If you qualify, you will pay a reduced rent and your rebate will be credited to your rent account.
  • Rent Allowance - This is provided by the Council to help anyone who has to pay rent to a private landlord this applies to most claims made before 7 April 2008. If you qualify a cheque will be sent to you or if requested to your landlord.
  • Local Housing Allowance – this is a new benefits scheme introduced in April 2008.  If a tenant makes a new claim for Housing Benefit on or after 7 April 2008, any entitlement to benefit will be worked out using the Local Housing Allowance rates and entitlement will normally be paid to the claimant not the landlord.

These changes only affect tenants who rent their home from a private landlord and make a new claim or change address after 7 April 2008.
