What you can do to stop Junk MailThe first practical step you can take is to put a ‘No Junk Mail’ notice on your letterbox to encourage the Postman not to deliver it. You can have your name and home address removed from mailing lists by contacting the Mailing Preference Service (MPS). This is a free service funded by the direct mail industry. The MPS can remove your name from up to 95% of Direct Mail lists. It will not stop mail that has been sent from overseas, un-addressed material or mail addressed to The Occupier, you will need to contact the Royal Mail for this. You may still receive mailings from companies with whom you have done business in the past, or from small local companies. If you wish these mailings to be stopped, you must notify these companies directly. It will take up to four months for the Service to take full effect although you should notice a reduction in your mail during this period. You can also register to stop junk faxes and telephone calls by contacting: MPS Freepost 29, London W1E OZT Or call them Tel: 0845 703 4599 Or online: www.mydm.co.uk/ For un-addressed or to the Occupier mail contact: Other tips if you do not wish to be bothered by junk mail:
Producing waste helps towards the creation of climate change. This is where carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases affect our weather patterns, for example flooding and rising temperatures. We know that every year over 1000 tonnes of junk mail is delivered to residents of Lewes district. This equals 25 kgs per household. Much of this junk is recycled but lots still ends up in the landfill site. Relevant Documents
