Animal nuisance

In general, people are allowed to keep animals, as long as they do not cause a nuisance or a health hazard to other people and premises around them.

Legislation exists to prevent nuisance and health hazards from being caused by keeping animals.

If you live in a council house, you are also bound by a contract of tenancy (part of which is a tenancy agreement), which prevents you from causing nuisance or health hazards by keeping animals.

Such things as noise, smells or waste caused by keeping animals could be a problem and if reported, will be investigated.

Dogs

We employ two Animal Wardens to carry out a number of functions in relation to controlling dogs. These include collecting stray dogs, promoting responsible dog ownership, enforcing byelaws relating to dogs (including fouling), dealing with dangerous dogs and dealing with nuisances caused by dogs.
