Delivery & Snack Vehicles

Mobile caterers and snack vehicles require permissions to operate and serve food in locations within the district.

Local laws on selling food from a vehicle may vary from council to council.  Mobile food business should register with the council where the vehicle is stored overnight. Registration is free.

Upon receiving a request, a routine hygiene inspection is made of your vehicle.  If applicable, this may also involve an inspection of business premises.

We ensure vehicles are kept clean and in good repair. Food should be transported at the correct temperature and cannot be contaminated in any way.

Street Trading Consent

In some areas street trading consent is needed to trade on the highway.  However, this is not the case in the Lewes District Council area. Permission is required from us to trade on pedestrican precincts.

Landowners’ Permission

Wherever you trade you will need the permission of the landowner to be on their land.

In the case of most lay-bys, the landowner will be the county council.  Within our district, the highways department of East Sussex County Council are responsible.

If you are hoping to trade on private land you must find out who owns that land and get their permission.  The landowner should check with the Council Planning Department they are allowed to have a food business on the land.
