It is a legal requirement that all dogs in public should carry identification bearing the owners name, current address and/or telephone number. Failure to comply with this can result in a heavy fine for the owner. This is a tiny electronic transponder injected into the loose skin at the back of the neck which can be read by a scanner and enables the owners details to be traced via a central computer. Lewes District Council have these scanners and every dog handled by them is automatically scanned. The owners can then be contacted and arrangements made for the return of the dog. To contact your Local Animal Wardens telephone the Council on 01273 471600 or direct dial 01273 484330. Alternatively you can e-mail ehealth@lewes.gov.uk. Use this number to report stray or missing dogs, and if you have any problems or enquiries relating to dogs.
