The results are combined with monitoring data from the other local authorities within East Sussex Radiation Monitoring Group to provide data on background levels of radiation. Lewes District Council carries out radiation monitoring as part of a programme of measurements designed by the East Sussex Radiation Monitoring Group. The members of the group are local authorities, East Sussex County Council and the Royal Sussex County Hospital. The main purpose of the group is to carry out a radiation monitoring programme in East Sussex and the adjacent district of Mid Sussex. Developed to protect and reassure the public, the programme seeks to establish background levels of radiation against which any future variations can be measured. Monitoring is undertaken monthly at selected sites. Within the area of Lewes District Council gamma monitoring is carried out at five sites using a Mini-Instruments 6-80 environmental monitor for instantaneous monitoring. The results of the monitoring are presented in an annual report published on the East Sussex County Council website.
