Information about artificial light, how it can cause a nuisance and what your we can do to prevent it.
Artificial light is an intrinsic part of modern life. Illumination is an essential component of streets, roads, hazardous areas, for security lighting, outdoor sports and recreation facilities, and even to enhance the appearance at night of buildings and landmarks.
Artificial light from premises can have a detrimental effect on the quality of the local environment. Local Authorities have received an increase in artificial light complaints during recent years. This is often as a result of the increased use of poorly considered, badly aimed light in the wrong place and at the wrong time.
Complaints about nuisance artificial light usually relate to the following sources:
The Environmental Health Department works with the Planning Department whenever possible to control lighting before it causes a nuisance. We cannot avoid all situations, however, so an officer will investigate any complaint of nuisance artificial light.
You might be asked to keep a written record in some situations, while the Officer performs an investigation. If you wish to make a complaint, or would like some advice, please contact the Public Health Team.
