A large part of the Town of Lewes is a Conservation Area. We have a duty to ensure their special interest is preserved or enhanced and therefore development proposals are subject to special scrutiny. We have an Architects' Advisory Panel which assists with this work. There are strict controls on the demolition of buildings in Conservation Areas and works to trees.
The following PDF document lists the Conservation Areas in the Lewes District, together with the dates on which they were designated and/or extended, their areas and the date of the Conservation Area Appraisal (if prepared). Buildings at RiskBuildings at risk are historic buildings which have deteriorated, become redundant or unoccupied and are under threat from dereliction or demolition and redevelopment. This register also includes buildings that require repair work or maintenance in order to preserve the fabric or appearance. Many of them are in one of the 35 conservation areas in the Lewes district.
