Producing food at home for sale and paying guests requires licensing in certain instances.
Using a home as a food business requires complying with current hygiene laws. Planning consent may also be needed.
Foods like cakes and jam are easier to make and sell from home. The risk of bacteria growth is low and their preparation simple.
However, it is not normally possible to manufacture high-risk foods in this way. Pre-packed meals, meat, fish and other ready-to-eat foods are difficult to produce from home.
Planning consent will need to be given before starting a bed and breakfast business. This will normally only apply to properties where over half the house is used as a B&B.
Registration as a food business will also need to be done. Kitchen will have to comply with current food hygiene laws. This may not involve great expense.
