What can be done about injured or dead dogs and cats on the roadside?Injured dogs or cats Following reports of any injured dogs or cats on the roadside or in the locality our Animal Wardens will collect and take the animal to a local veterinary practice. Attempts will be made to locate the owner as soon as possible. An assessment will be carried out on the extent of the injuries and treatment will be carried out where appropriate. Consultation with a Veterinary Surgeon and the RSPCA will be undertaken before any decision is made, due to the extent of the injuries, to put an animal 'to sleep'. The Council will expect to reclaim the cost of any treatment from the animals' owners. If the injured animal remains unclaimed the Council will, after seven days, arrange for it to be re-homed. Dead dogs or cats Following reports of any dead dogs or cats on the roadside or in the locality our Animal Wardens will collect and take the animal to a local veterinary practice. Attempts will be made to locate the owner as soon as possible. However, if the animal remains unclaimed the Council will, after seven days, arrange for the body to be cremated. |
