Highway Projection Licences

A licence is required for any display that may protrude or project over a public highway to ensure it does not interfere with traffic or pedestrians.

Who Should Apply

Anyone wishing to place something on or above a highway. A Highways Projection licence will normally be sought and granted as part of the planning process. However in some circumstances it may be applicable to grant separately.

This will determine factors for placing items near a highway or on a public footpath. All goods or equipment on display under the terms of the licence shall be kept within the area specified.

Displays and signs

The maximum depth a display can protrude over a public footway is 1.05 metres, subject to 2.1 metres clear passageway between the edge of the display and the road or any intervening pavement furniture such as a bollard or telephone box.

To allow for the safe passage of pedestrians beneath canopies, blinds, CCTV equipment and other hanging objects, a minimum vertical clearance of 2.75 metres is required from the surface of the footway to the underside of any projection.
