Scrap Metal Licences

Scrap metal businesses are required to provide certain business information and make an application for registration to operate.

Who Should Apply

Anyone operating as a scrap metal dealer in our area needs to be registered with us.

Apply Online

We work in partnership with Business Link to issue all of our licences online. You will be required to follow these steps:

Complete the Business Link questionnaire on 'Your Business'
Receive a checklist of all licences that apply to you
Apply for each licence from the Business Link results page.

By creating a Business Link account, your results will be stored in your profile. You may log-in and return to them in your own time. In addition to listing all the licences required, the questionnaire results will also detail the regulations your business should meet as well as provide further help and guidance.

No fee is required

Application Process

On receipt of a completed application we will recommend or reject approval of the licence. If approved a copy of the licence along with conditions will be sent to you. These conditions must be adhered to at all times.

Registration is renewable on a three-yearly basis from the date of issue. A reminder letter and renewal form will be sent to you prior to expiry of the current registration.

Offences and Penalties

Any person found guilty of failing to register a scrap metal business or to notify the local authority of alterations in the appropriate particulars shall be liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding £1000
Any person found guilty of failing to notify a local authority that a business has ceased shall be liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding £200
Any person found guilty of failing to keep the proper prescribed records shall be liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding £1000
Any person found guilty of acquiring scrap metal from a person under the age of 16 shall on conviction be liable to a fine not exceeding £200
Any person who obstructs the entry of an authorised inspector or fails to produce any book or document, which the officer has a right to inspect, shall on conviction be liable to a fine not exceeding £200
Where a person is convicted of failing to register or failing to keep records of dealings the court may make an order imposing restrictions on the dealer for a period not exceeding two years.
