What can I do to get rid of moles, squirrels, foxes, badgers, bats or snakes?MolesMoles are a garden nuisance but not an environmental health pest. Our Pest Control Officers may be able to advise you or you may need a private contractor (see Yellow Pages). SquirrelsAction is best focussed on prevention and proofing your home by sealing off access points. Please telephone 01273 484354 as our officers may be able to advise either by telephone or by arranging an on site visit. FoxesVery little can be done to get rid of foxes as killing them is difficult, controversial and often without any benefit, however, you can take measures yourself to deter foxes. Do not leave out any food, properly contain refuse and ensure all pets kept outside are well protected. If you require any further help or advice please telephone our Pest Control Officers on 01273 484354. BadgersOur officers can only advise as badgers and their setts are protected and can only be killed under licence. For further advice telephone 01273 484354 or for more detailed advice contact either English Nature on 01273 476595 or visit their web site at www.english-nature.org.uk/ or D.E.F.R.A. (Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) at www.defra.gov.uk/. BatsAll bats and their roosts are fully protected by the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. You must consult English Nature before you do anything that might affect bats or their roosts. Please contact English Nature on 0733 340345 or visit their web site at www.english-nature.org.uk/. SnakesWe may be able to offer advice but snakes are protected and it is illegal to kill or injure native snakes or lizards. England is home to three species of snake: grass snake, adder and smooth snake. The grass snake is by far the most commonly encountered species in gardens and is harmless. Adders, which are venomous but normally pose little threat, rarely turn up in gardens. The smooth snake is also very rarely found in gardens. Escaped pets or accidentally imported snakes can be a variety of colours and sizes. As with all snakes, leave well alone. For much more detailed information and advice on identification and how to deal with snakes in your garden please contact English Nature on 01273 476595 or visit their web site at www.english-nature.org.uk/. |
