Bathing Water

The European Unions Bathing Water Directive sets the standards of bathing water quality for all bathing beaches in EU countries.

From May to September the Environment Agency takes weekly tests of the sea water for total coliforms, faecal coliforms and faecal streptococci at Saltdean, Newhaven and Seaford beaches.  This checks the water complies with the EU Bathing Water Directive.  The sample results are then used to provide an indication of water quality on the bathing water poster.

The results are displayed on a bathing water poster at our Tourist Information Centres and at Newhaven and Seaford beaches. These weekly results can also be viewed on the Environment Agency website.

A summary of the annual bathing water quality monitoring results for England and the UK (Defra’s annual news release and UK summary report) for the 2009 bathing season can be found on the Defra website.
