Animal Welfare

The law protects the walfare of animals to ensure they are protected from suffering and kept in a safe, suitable environment.

Under the Animal Welfare Act, the law has been improved. Being cruel to an animal is against the law and you must also ensure that all the welfare needs of your animal are adequately met. This applies to owners and keepers and include the need;

The law has increased the minimum age to 16 at which a person can buy an animal and stops giving animals as prizes to unaccompanied children under this age. Cruelty or not providing the welfare needs of an animal may conclude in a ban from owning animals and a fine of up to £20000 and or a prison sentence.

Report Animal Mistreatment

The Animal Control Team can investigate cases where a pet animal is being mistreated.  If you have information on cruel treatment of a pet animal you can report it to us.
