Caravan Site Licences

Caravan sites and Mobile Home Parks are licensed to safeguard the health and safety of occupiers and visitors to the site. The licences are not time-limited unless planning conditions apply.

Who Should Apply

There are several categories of licence:

Special Short Term (not to exceed three years)
Residential Site for More Than One Caravan
Residential Site for One Caravan Only
Holiday Site for More than One Caravan
Holiday Site for One Caravan Only
Short Term Transit Site

There are some circumstances when a licence is not required:

a single caravan sited for not more than two consecutive nights for a maximum of 28 days in any 12 months
up to three caravans on a site of not less than five acres for a maximum of 28 days in any 12 months.
sites occupied by exempted organisations such as the Caravan Club.
sites of up to five caravans certified by an exempt organisation and which are for members only
sites occupied by the County Council. These are usually gypsy sites.
sites for temporary and special purposes such as caravan rallies, agricultural and forestry workers, building and engineering sites and travelling showmen.
a site for tents only can be used for a maximum of 28 days in any 12 months.

The Caravan Sites and Control of Development Act 1960 states planning permission must be obtained before a caravan site can be issued with a licence.

Apply Online

We work in partnership with Business Link to issue all of our licences online. You will be required to follow these steps:

Complete the Business Link questionnaire on 'Your Business'
Receive a checklist of all licences that apply to you
Apply for each licence from the Business Link results page.

By creating a Business Link account, your results will be stored in your profile. You may log-in and return to them in your own time. In addition to listing all the licences required, the questionnaire results will also detail the regulations your business should meet as well as provide further help and guidance.

Fees

No fee is required

Application Process

On receipt of a completed form we liaise with the Fire Brigade and our Planning Department to discuss relevant issues. A visit will follow from an Environmental Health Officer to inspect the site and check that it complies to the relevant site licence conditions, including:

plot numbers are not exceeded,
there is adequate space between plots ,
ample fire safety equipment is available,
water supply and drainage,
the provision of adequate amenities,
fire precautions and electrical installations,
roadways on the site,
refuse facilities

Approval

If the officer recommends the licence be granted, a copy will be sent to you along with the conditions. The conditions are specific to each individual site. These must be adhered to at all times when caravans are present on the site.

All licences issued are permanent, with the exception of special short-term licences which are valid for three years only.

You should notify us if there is an increase in the number of caravans or holiday periods are extended, or there is a change in ownership. Further inspection may be required.
