A dog isn't just for Christmas

Animal Warden Tracey Hills with ‘Alfie’, a Yorkshire TerrierPuppies are an ever popular gift at Christmas time. However, it is a sad fact that one in 50 puppies bought each year are soon after abandoned by their families.

Lewes District Council deals with many lost or abandoned dogs every year; roughly one a day. We are keen to avoid an influx in the New Year with some advice.

Animal Wardens Tracey Hills and Amanda Teale are encouraging families to make every effort to avoid impulse purchases in the run up to Christmas.

Tracey said: "Every year we receive calls from the public about puppies and dogs that have been abandoned on the streets. They are often scared, hungry and confused”.

Amanda added: "We encourage families who want a dog to consider a rescue dog. Rescue centres can offer advice on all aspects of dog care and will help you choose the dog that is right for you."

Within the district this includes organisations such as Raystede Centre for Animal Welfare near Ringmer, or the Dog's Trust in Shoreham.
