Dangerous & Wild Animals Licences

Keeping dangerous and wild animals requires a licence issued by us.

Dangerous Wild Animals Act 1976 requires certain animals to be registered before being kept as pets. We issue licences for pet owners within the district.

A completed form should be returned to us to apply. We also require a valid insurance certificate covering liability for damage the animals may cause.

Before issuing, we ask a veterinary surgeon to inspect the premises and animals and report their findings. We also inspect the premises to ensure other conditions are met.

If sufficient, a licence will be granted and issued together with conditions. A fee of £125 plus veterinary costs will be charged.

Licences are renewable annually on 1 January. Renewals are sent before the expiration.

Some of the pets in this category are marsupials, primates, wild rodents (such as porcupines), wild cats and dogs (such as tigers and wolves), bears, elephants, wild horses (such as zebras), camels, antelopes, buffalo, ostriches, crocodiles and venomous spiders (such as the funnel web and the black widow).

We can advise you if an animal is not listed but you think it may need registering.
