Keeping dangerous and wild animals requires a licence to be issued. Read who needs to apply, how to do it and the process once submitted.
Certain animals need to be registered before being kept as pets. We issue licences for pet owners within the district who keep pets classed in Dangerous Wild Animals Act 1976. Some of the pets in this category include:

We work in partnership with Business Link to issue all of our licences online. You will be required to follow these steps:
By creating a Business Link account, your results will be stored in your profile. You may log-in and return to them in your own time. In addition to listing all the licences required, the questionnaire results will also detail the regulations your business should meet as well as provide further help and guidance.

Licences are renewable annually on 1 January. Renewals are sent before the expiration.
Along with a completed application for, we also require a valid insurance certificate covering liability for damage the animals may cause. Before issuing, we ask a veterinary surgeon to inspect the premises and animals and report their findings. We also inspect the premises to ensure other conditions are met. If sufficient, a licence will be granted and issued together with conditions.
While any animal is being kept under the authority of the Licence:
The person to whom the licence is granted shall hold a current insurance policy which insures them and any other person entitles to keep the animal under the authority of the licence against liability for any damage which may be caused by the animal, the terms of such policy being satisfactory in the opinion of the authority.
The species and number of animal of each species which may be kept under the Authority of the licence shall be restricted to those specified in the Schedule of the licence.
The person to whom the licence is granted shall make available a copy of the licence at all reasonable times to any authorised officer of the council.
