Renewable energy technologies already meet nearly three per cent of the UK's total electricity needs. The Government wants to raise that to 10 percent by 2010 and has put in place a number of measures to ensure that the growth necessary to meet that target takes place.
The Renewables Obligation, introduced in April 2002, obliges all they require power suppliers to derive from renewables a specified proportion of the electricity they supply to their customers. The European Union has set a target of 12 percent of all energy and 22.1 per cent of electricity, from renewable energy by 2010. Each country has its own "indicative target", with the UK's being 10%. Developing a thriving renewables industry is a real opportunity for Britain. It encourages the development of new technologies; creates jobs and tackling global environmental challenges. |
