They also identify specific features which contribute towards their character, for example historic buildings and buildings which are locally significant, important green and open spaces, significant views, natural elements such as trees, and features which help make an area locally distinct. They may even include intangible qualities such as activities, sights and smells which are characteristic of a place. The documents also identify elements that could be improved. Visitors to the area also may find these publications provide interesting information about special and interesting local features. New Draft Conservation Area AppraisalsFour new draft Conservation Area Appraisals have been prepared. These appraisals, for Barcombe (Cross), Barcombe, Denton, and South Heighton, are now available for consultation. Please find the draft Appraisals and associated Townscape Appraisal Maps below. Copies are also available to view at Lewes District Council Planning Services Office, Southover House Southover Road, Lewes. The current draft stage of their production enables local people to participate in the identification of features that are important to the character of the area in which they live or work. Local involvement is an essential aspect of the consultation process and local residents are encouraged to comment on the draft documents. Following this consultation period, any appropriate revisions will be made before the Conservation Area Appraisals are endorsed by the Council and published. Please ensure that any comments are received in writing by Friday 12 December 2008. These are now available to view or purchase from Lewes District Council, they can be purchased from the Planning Department, Lewes or the Tourist Information Centres in Seaford and Lewes (addresses at bottom of page). The files above may take a couple of minutes to display if you are on a normal 56kb/s connection. If you wish to view the files but are having difficulty displaying them they can be viewed or purchased at the Planning Department, or at the Tourist Information Centres in Lewes and Seaford (addresses below).
