Your Council

Lewes District covers an area of 292 square kilometres, much of which forms part of the Sussex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Our coastline is 14.5 km long. Half the District, including the historic County town of Lewes is designated to be included in the South Downs National Park.
The District comprises a large rural area and five main towns – Lewes, Peacehaven, Telscombe, Newhaven and Seaford most of which are located along the southern coastal strip.  There are 28 parishes in the District.

To protect and enhance the quality of the environment:
• By reducing waste and improving recycling performance,
• keep local areas clean and tidy
• maintaining good environmental quality and sustainable land use.

To support the housing, health and social needs of everyone in our communities:
• By improving the quality, availability and affordability of housing in the District,
• supporting the provision of a range of services and facilities that meet local needs
• protecting and improving the health and wellbeing of everyone in the District

To support and promote a diverse and prosperous local economy:
• by promoting sustainable tourism and cultural services
• supporting the local business community
• encouraging regeneration of our local communities
