Our Equality Policy

Our equality policy helps us to meet our statutory Equality Duty under the Equality Act 2010. It is part of our ethos of “One District, One Council.” Our vision is:

• An unswerving commitment to customer service;
• To connect with our workforce and partners to inspire exceptional contribution;
• To save money and where possible put money back into our residents’ and business pockets where we can.

We aim to

• Eliminate unfair discrimination;
• Advance equality of opportunity and
• Foster good relations

between different groups of people who share the following legally protected characteristics:

• age;
• disability;
• marriage and civil partnership (but only in respect of eliminating unlawful discrimination);
• pregnancy and maternity;
• gender reassignment;
• race – this includes ethnic or national origins, colour or nationality;
• religion or belief – this includes lack of belief
• sex (gender)
• sexual orientation.

In addition, we recognise that socio-economic status can be a significant barrier to equality of opportunity.

Our Equality Objectives

We have set three objectives for 2012 – 16. We want to ensure that:

• All councillors and staff receive appropriate learning opportunities so that good practice in equality and diversity is embedded in the   culture and work practices of the organisation.
• There is effective use of engagement, consultation, monitoring and equality analysis to develop services responsive to the diverse needs of our community
• Our offices and services are accessible to people with disabilities.
