Parliamentary elections are held to elect Members of Parliament to represent the views of their constituents in the Houses of Commons. The Lewes district is covered by two members.
Members of Parliament (MPs) are elected to the House of Commons at a General Election and represent their constituents at a national level.
The Prime Minister of the day determines when a General Election is held. However, one must be held every five years. When a seat becomes vacant between General Elections, a by-election is held.
The Lewes district is covered by two parliamentary constituencies, Lewes and Brighton Kemptown. This is known as 'cross border' as the areas represented by each seat do not align with the corresponding unitry, district or borough council areas who deal with the electoral register.
Elections are administered by the relevant local councils, in this case Lewes District Council, Brighton & Hove City Council and Wealden District Council. This includes the electoral register, postal votes and polling stations. In these instances, you may register to vote with one local authority, but the count and results handled by another.
A UK Parliamentary Election was held on Thursday 6 May 2010. The full result is as follows duly electing Norman Baker (Liberal Democrat) as the representing member for the Lewes Constituency.
There are 22 town and parish councils and 6 parish meetings within the Lewes District. The number of councillors for individual town or parishes varies depending upon its ward size.
There are 21 wards in the Lewes District, represented by 41 councillors in total. Each ward has one, two or three councillors depending on the number of residents, or electors, in that area.
There are 8 divisions within the Lewes District represented at East Sussex County Council level. The remaining divisions are made up from the surrounding districts of Wealden, Eastbourne, Rother and Hastings.
There are two local constituencies represented by Members of Parliament within the boundary of the Lewes District. The Lewes Constituency includes the majority of the Lewes District and includes areas to the east, including East Dean, Alfriston and Polegate; which are part of the Wealden District. The Brighton Kemptown constituency overlaps into the Lewes District, taking in parts of Telscombe and Peacehaven on the coast.
The UK is divided into 12 electoral regions, each represented at the European Parliament. The Lewes District falls within the South East region.
