27 June 2008: Seaford Graffiti Blitz

A joint operation to clean up unsightly graffiti in Seaford was carried out on Wednesday 25th June by the Lewes District Crime Reduction Partnership.  Park and Street Wardens from Lewes District Council's Clean and Green Team were joined by a team from Wyevale Landscape Ltd, the Council's main grounds maintenance contractors.  Seaford Town Council provided funding for the clean up, which targeted areas of graffiti in Crouch Gardens, Chalvington Field and the Salts Recreation ground.

Len Fisher, Clerk to the Town Council said, "Seaford is a pleasant and safe place to live and attracts many visitors to the area, particularly at this time of year.  When there is a lot of graffiti in an area it can start to look run down and can affect how people feel about the town. We want to show local people that we take pride in the appearance of the town and will work with our partners to keep it looking its best." 

The Lewes District Crime Reduction Partnership takes graffiti seriously.  It costs council tax payers money to clear up and can contribute to fear of crime.  Lewes District Council Anti Social Behaviour Officers are working with the Police to set up a database of 'taggers' and will be working with local schools to identify the mindless scribblers who scrawl their names on public property. 

If anyone can give information to the Council or the Police which leads to a charge against a tagger, they will receive a £100 reward and an iPod.
