24 June 2008: Beware bogus tree surgeons says Lewes District Council

Lewes District Council is asking local residents to follow some simple rules to protect themselves against bogus tree workers. This follows concern after a recent case of a company who have set up in close imitation of another and are currently under investigation by Trading Standards.

Daniel Wynn, Lewes District Council Tree and Landscape Officer said,' At the very least we recommend asking for a written quote for the works and asking to see a copy of their current employer's liability and public liability insurance certificates. Do not pay any money until the works are completed to the agreed specifications detailed in the written quotation.'

A local reputable firm 'Oakleaf Tree Surgery' has been imitated by a company called 'Oakhurst Tree Surgery'. They have used exactly the same leaflet as Oakleaf but have substituted their own name. Trading Standards are currently investigating the situation. It is not clear whether the imitation company are insured or competent to undertake tree works.
