Lewes District Council is represented by 41 councillors. They represent local people in the 21 wards that make-up the Lewes district. Each councillor is elected for a four-year term.
Councillors are not full-time employees of the council. They are local people elected to represent Lewes district residents and make decisions on their behalf.
Councillors make decisions about the services the council provides. This is done through a series of committees.
They include Cabinet, Scrutiny Committee, Planning Applications Committee, Licensing Committee, Audit Committee and others.
The public can attend the committees and meetings and comment on what is said.
There are 21 wards in the Lewes district. Each ward returns, or votes in, one, two or three councillors depending on the number of residents in that area.
This make a total of 41 councillors across the district.
