The week is organised jointly by Lewes District Council and Sussex Police and aims to teach children from school year 6 (age 10-11) how to deal with different safety scenarios in relation to fires, accidents, electricity, dogs, strangers, water safety, roads and internet safety. Schools will be divided into work groups to rotate round the different 'action stations'. They will be given scores according to how best they deal with an imaginary situation. There is a trophy and prize money for the winning school and winning special school. Helping with sponsorship are Seaford Rotary Club, Sussex Police Authority and Waitrose. Tony Still, Senior Environmental Health Officer at Lewes District Council says: “This is an important event that helps raise children’s awareness of potential dangers. Our Safety in Action Week is a very popular event with local schools and this year there will be over 800 children taking part – all learning how to keep safe and cope in a crisis.” For further details contact: Tony Still, Senior Environmental Health Officer, Lewes District Council, 01273 484367.
