21 April 2008: Real nappies don't cost the earth says Lewes District Council

Lewes District Council is supporting Real Nappy Week, which runs from today until 27 April. This national campaign is aimed at raising awareness about the impact disposable nappies have on the environment.

Our Recycling Officer has already met and spoken to a group of childcare students from Sussex Downs Community college about the benefits of using real nappies.

The Council is keen to encourage the prevention of nappy waste. Nearly three billion nappies are thrown away in the UK every year. A baby can produce up to two tons of soiled disposable nappies. It’s very important to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill and to recycle wherever we can. Real nappies don’t cost the earth - in fact using washable nappies not only helps the environment but saves people a considerable amount of money when compared with the cost of buying disposable nappies. A wide-ranging choice of washable cloth nappies is available as an eco-friendly alternative. There are also companies that offer convenient laundry services.

Real nappies are a healthy alternative, as they are mostly made of natural fabrics while disposable nappies are made of ultra absorbent chemicals, paper pulp and plastics. Organic cotton and hemp nappies as well as organic wool overpants are available.

Real nappies come in all shapes and styles, from fitted to flat, with poppers or Velcro, even designs in day-glo colours or leopard print.
