Paying for Local Services

Lewes District Council collects the Council Tax on behalf of the following authorities to help provide many important local services in your area.

• East Sussex County Council
• Sussex Police Authority
• East Sussex Fire Authority
• Lewes District Council
• Your local town or parish council

The amount each authority needs is shown separately on your Council Tax bill. The amount you pay depends on the Valuation Band for your home.
Each local authority decides how much it needs to spend after taking into account contributions from Government and business ratepayers.  

Business Rates are collected locally and paid over to Government. The amount collected nationally is then shared between each local authority, based on a set formula.

The total average Band D Council Tax is £1479.41, an average increase of 4.57 % on the 2006/07 Bill. Lewes District Council's share is £174.09 and has increased by £7.25 (4.3%).

The reasons for the increase, other than inflation, are to contribute towards the following:-

East Sussex County Council
Increase in spending on Adult Social care of £6.7 million.
Increase in spending on Children’s Services of £2 million
