You are here: Home > Your Council > Council tax and finance > How is my Council Tax set? How is my Council Tax set?The amount you pay is based upon the property valuation band that your home falls into. The average is for a Band D property. The value of your home has been assessed by the Valuation Officer (part of the Inland Revenue) and is based on the estimated sale price on 1st April 1991. Changes in property values since then cannot be taken into account. The difference between the valuation bands has been set by Government. The bands and their respective values are shown on the reverse of your Council Tax bill. The Council fixes the basic Council Tax rate at the Band D level which, for 2007/08 is £1479.41. This is the total amount needed by the main local authorities in the District. Added to this is the amount needed by your local town or parish council. The table below shows how much you will have to pay depending on where you live in the District. |
