Report waste dumped illegally and your responsibility in disposing of waste to comply within the law.
A fly-tip is where people choose to tip their rubbish in an unauthorised place. This could be a remote part of the countryside or on another person's land.
Fly tipping is a problem for many reasons. It costs us, and therefore you as tax payers, to clean it up. The waste dumped may be harmful or cause pollution. It is an eyesore and disrupts wildlife.
For these reasons, fly tipping is illegal and offenders can be fined up to £50,000 and /or face five years imprisonment.
To help us, we ask members of the public to report incidents of fly tipping. Where possible, take note of the following:
Incidents can be reported to Customer Services or by using the online Fault Reporting system.
We may wish to prosecute the person fly tipping and may use your evidence in court. If this is the case, you are likely to be asked if you would be willing to give evidence.
Householders must take responsibility for waste, or risk a fine if they do not. We have a detailed Householder’s Responsibility and your obligation.
If the person responsible for the fly tipping or the owner of the refuse cannot be identified the rubbish becomes the responsibility of the owner of the land.
Private land includes unadopted alleyways which are the joint responsibility of the owners of all the properties with direct access onto the alleyway.
