The naming and numbering of streets and buildings in Lewes District, is controlled by the Council under the Public Health Act 1925.
The naming of streets within the Lewes District is a statutory Function of Lewes District Council and is covered by Sections 17-19 of the Public Health Act 1925. This Act also covers naming and numbering of properties on these streets which is the legal responsibility of the Council and cannot be undertaken by any other organisation or individual.
Maintaining a comprehensive and high standard for naming streets and numbering or naming properties is important as it allows:
Many legal transactions associated with properties are withheld until they can be identified by street name and numbers, for instance, statutory undertakers will not normally connect their services until such time as the premises have been given a formal postal address.
The Council now has a formal Street Naming and Property Numbering Policy regarding street naming and numbering including details on the consultation process, guidance notes with regards to names of streets and charges for the street numbering and property naming services we provide.
Anyone seeking an address for a new property, should apply in writing to the Council enclosing a site plan, to a scale not less than 1:1250. If you are wishing to change the name of your property please use Online application form (N.B. There is a £25 charge for this service).
Please note - no address within the District is legal unless authorised by Lewes District Council.
