Lewes District Council manages two cemeteries - one in Seaford and one in Lewes. There are no crematoriums within the Lewes District Area. Newhaven Town Council also provide a cemetery at Newhaven. Both Lewes and Seaford Cemeteries are maintained to a high standard, with attractive floral displays and shrub borders. Both of our cemeteries are open from 9am until dusk, 7 days a week, all year round. Bookings for funerals should be arranged either via a Funeral Director, or direct with the council on the contact number shown below. A "Grant of Exclusive Right of Burial" may be purchased in advance. This is an agreement where the grant holder has the exclusive right to bury in a pre determined plot for a set number of years ( 50 years extendable to 75 at time of purchase) For further details of how to purchase the "Exclusive Right to Burial" please contact the Community Services Department on the number below. Memorial SafetyLewes District Council is currently assessing the best method of ensuring that all memorials within the cemeteries are safe and do not cause a danger to the general public. It is anticipated that a new code of practice will be developed specifying how all new memorials will be installed. For further details please contact the Community Services Department. The site offers limited car parking, a chapel and public toilets. The new section of the cemetery was opened 5 years ago and has increased the number of burial plot options available. The site offers traditional plots, Lawn Cemetery Plots and ashes plots. There is also a small ashes garden where cremated remains can be scattered (by prior arrangement only).
