Significant areas of Lewes District are at risk from flooding. This is managed by the Environment Agency with support from us, with flood defences and policies in place to cope.
The threat comes from main rivers like the Sussex Ouse and its principal tributaries and from inundation by the sea.
The Environment Agency's flood plain maps show the areas at risk.
Flood defences on the main rivers and at Seaford Beach is the responsibility of the Environment Agency to maintain.
We are responsible for ‘non-main’ rivers. Only one non-main river, Winterbourne Stream, immediately above Bell Lane, Lewes has been identified as being critical.
This means having the potential to flood significant numbers of people and property. However, an annual maintenance programme to reduce flood risk has been put in place.
The Environment Agency offer a flood warning service to people at the appropriate time. Previously, flood warnings were issued to large geographical areas. Now, a more targeted service is in place.
Communities within floodplains have been identified and warnings will be tailored specifically to these areas. Flood warnings will still be issued by phone, fax, email, text, to the new flood warning areas.
