Business Rates Reports

Lewes District Council regularly receives a number of requests of a similar nature asking for details under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOI) relating to Business Rate accounts (non-domestic properties).

In order to improve openness and transparency, and to make it easier for you to find this information, we now publish specific information on the most commonly requested reports.

As we create these reports monthly, we will not continue to provide individual responses to requests during the year, or for similar information.  Any such requests will be politely declined.

The new business rate liabilities list, which shows accounts recently added to the database, will be updated on a monthly basis.  It shows new accounts created as at the date the report was run where the start date for the account is within the period shown.

The spreadsheet for all business rate accounts includes the billing authority reference (property reference) which can be used to obtain the hereditament information from at the Valuation Office Agency.

The information has been screened to remove accounts relating to individuals and sole-traders as this data is exempt from disclosure under Section 40(2) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000.  Account references are not included as these are personal to the account.

Lewes District Council cannot vouch for the on-going accuracy of the data as accounts are being updated daily. Credits can be a result of changes made on the Rateable Value of a property, business rates overpayments, amendments to the start and end dates to accounts etc. With regards to credits there may be corresponding accounts with debits which the credits could be transferred to.

When applying for a refund, you will need to provide documents showing that you were or are the ratepayer or that you have permission from the ratepayer to act on their behalf.
