Small and medium sized enterprises

According to the Department for Trade and Industry, a small enterprise:

• has fewer than 50 employees,
• has either an annual turnover of no more than €7 million (about £4.3 million) or a balance sheet total of no more than €5 million (about £3.1 million)
• is no more than 25% owned by companies not falling within this definition.

A medium-sized enterprise:

• has between 50 and 249 employees,
• has either an annual turnover of no more than €40 million (about £25 million) or a balance sheet total of no more than €27 million (about £17 million)
• is no more than 25% owned by companies not falling within this definition.
