Breeding Licence

A licence is required for keeping a breeding establishment for dogs. We issue them for a fee and last for one year.

The Breeding of Dogs Act 1973 requires the process to be licenced by their local authority. This is where dogs being sold in the course a business, whether by their keeper or by any other person.

We issue licences annually subject to the applicant meeting set conditions. We ensure dogs are kept in suitable accommodation, fed, watered and provided with bedding material, adequately exercised and visited at suitable intervals.

We ensure all reasonable precautions are taken to prevent and control the spread infectious or contagious diseases. Fire protection is also taken into account.

Bitches should not be mated if they are less than one year old and give birth to more than six litters of puppies each. A period of twelve months should pass between giving birth to puppies.

Accurate records should be kept and made available for inspection when requested.

A fee of £86 will be charged when issuing a licence. They are valid for a year between 1 January to 31 December. Renewals are sent before a licence expires.

Should we refuse to grant such a licence, or set a condition you oppose, you may appeal to a magistrates' court.
