Pet shops

Business selling animals require a licence issued by us. A fee is charged with the licence renewable annually.

The Pet Animals 1951 (Amendment) Act 1983 defines a pet shop a business of selling animals as pets, and keeping animals with a view to them being sold by the keeper or by any other person.

Premises not already a pet shop may require change of use approval. Our Planning Department are able to advise further.

A completed form should be returned. A fee of £110 is charged for a licence.

The premises will be inspected to ensure conditions are met. This will take into account the Register of animals purchased (and where from), their welfare, isolation facilities, quarantine facilities and the general housekeeping of the premise.

If satisfied, a licence will be granted and sent to the applicant along with a copy of the conditions. These conditions should be adhered to and a copy of the licence should be on visible display at all times.

Licences are renewable annually on 1st January. To assist current licence holders a reminder letter and renewal form will be sent prior to that date.
